Painting the Black
In the book "Painting the Black", Ryan Ward is a senior in high school. he had a love to play baseball until he broke his ankle. That all changed when Josh Daniels moved in the street. Ryan found that love for basball again. They started playing around down at the Community Center on the baseball diamonds. Then football season came around and Josh was going to try out for the team. Josh made the team and didn't want to throw the baseball around. He wanted to throw the football around cince he was the back up Quarterback. That was bad for Ryan because Ryan had just decided to tryout for the baseball team as a cather. Ryan needed all the practice he could get if he wanted to make the team. Josh was the star, when the starting Quater back was injured in the first game. Then, josh got in trouble at school for lifting a girls shirt up. His ponisment was he wasn't allowed to play in the next football game. That was the game that would allow them to go to state.I think this is one of the best books i have ever read. I recomend this book to any body that likes any kind of sport. Anybody would like this book.

The American Woman 2001-02: Getting to the Top

I am planning to use this in my class in the fall. . .
I've looked high and low for a good textbook to use for the class I will teach on "Women & Politics" in the fall at Samford University. I was thrilled when I came across this book at a book fair. Many of my students are quite conservative, and anything titled "feminist" is likely to scare them. I have found that the best way to get such students to start questioning some of their ingrained gender role stereotypes is to slap them upside the proverbial head with statistics on women in U.S. society. This book is chock full of powerful statistics that tell no lies about what it means to be a woman in U.S. society, and also how one's racial identity affects one's experience of womanhood. I plan to assign the statistics (which are in a separate section of the book)for the first week of class. Then the students will have to interpret the statistics themselves. Why is it that there are so few women leaders in academia, in the military, in the corporate world? Why is it that there are more girls than boys entering college now? Why do women earn less than men do? These questions will then be the starting point from which we can explore theory. In sum, other professors out there -- this is a perfect book to assign for college students with no prior exposure to women's studies.

Analysis of the Institutes of the Christian Religion of John Calvin
Published in Paperback by P & R Press (February, 2001)
Authors: Ford Lewis Battles and John Walchenbach
Average review score:

Excellent
This book is very well done. While his edition of the Institutes is nowhere as good as the two volume edition by John T. McNeill,
Battles has an excellent grasp on the content of the institutes. He takes, in order, every book, section, and paragraph and explains the content of it in a concise way. The book is in outline form and can readily be used as a systematic theology--even though the institutes are not technically a systematic theology.

Anatomy of Pilates

The Anatomy of Pilates is FABULOUS!!!!!
The Anatomy of Pilates is the best book out there for the serious pilates practitioner, and believe me I have read them all. Its copius detail is comprehensive and well organized. It covers the anatomy and biomechanics behind pilates, which are essential to proper isolation and coordination of muscles and movements. Explanations bridge the language of medical professionals, trainers, and clients so that you can talk easily about the same issues to anyone you meet. The 16 Fundamentals are the basis for every other pilates exercize there is; if you can master and understand these you can do anything, and teach anything. I cannot recommend this book highly enough.

An incisive discourse
"Approaching Death" belongs with "How we Die" and Bill Moyer's Milestone "On Our Own Terms" as the seminal studies on Dying. At times empathetic, scholarly, and broadminded. This treatise should be read by all of us.

The Archaeology of Useppa Island (Monograph (University of Florida. Institute of Archaeology and paleoenvironMental Studies), 3.)
Published in Paperback by IAPS Books (November, 1999)
Author: William H. Marquardt
Average review score:

Exploring the Calusa culture in western Florida
Archeology requires essential components to successfully attain its goals: well-trained specialists, careful research procedures (including modern scientific techniques), expert analysis of archeological artifacts, and skillful re-creation of the life of earlier societies.

"The Archaeology of Useppa Island" amply succeeds in achieving these goals. Edited by Dr. William Marquardt of the Florida Museum of Natural History, the book effectively presents evidence about the Calusa natives who lived on this island on the western periphery of Florida centuries ago. The primary period of occupancy is estimated between 800 AD-1500 AD.

Dr. Marquardt's reputation as a recognized Calusa scholar, and his diligent leadership in planning and conducting archeological field studies at Calusa sites, makes him the appropriate person to compile and publish this work. It will be useful to professionals in the field as well as appealing to the general public interested in Florida history or archeological studies.

Dr. Marquardt and his associates discovered numerous artifacts during their excavations in the 1980s and 1990s on Useppa Island, located off the west coast of Florida: pottery and jewelry, "worked" shells intended for various purposes, and human remains. In addition, other artifacts from the post-Calusa period (mostly Cuban in origin) give clues to those who later lived on Useppa. All categories of items are described in detail, supplemented by helpful photos, sketches, and maps. Several chapters classify and date soil layers and other natural materials on the island. Each scholarly contributor to this volume has added to our knowledge of the Calusa living in this substantial settlement.

Later chapters cover the history of Useppa in the 19th and 20th centuries, especially for the latter period when the island became well known as a fishing and vacation resort in the years prior to World War II. The author also describes its role to train Cuban exiles prior to their failed 1961 Bay of Pigs invasion. Useppa today is a private association of lovely homes located in a charming and picturesque setting. The book concludes with the recollections of the person who developed Useppa in its present form.

Having personally grown up in this area in the 1940s and 1950s, living on an island adjacent to Useppa, I can attest to the careful descriptions and informative history contained in this very interesting and carefully written book. Highly recommended.

The Architect's Handbook of Professional Practice

Worth It!
In addition to the all-new format (thankfully no more binders!), this book really does cover EVERYTHING an architect needs to know to run a business-- from working with clients to developing added-value services-- all in one book. I especially appreciate the new section devoted to understanding client motivation, thinking, processes, and values and the new section summarizing services I can offer to expand my client base. This is definitely the book that every architect needs to keep close at hand!
